The Twelve Ancient Soul Skills of the Healer

In the modern day, burnout, lack of support and overwhelm cause many gifted healers, helpers and carers to leave the professions that they love. This has potentially very damaging effects on communities and society in general, as healers, carers, coaches, therapists, health professionals and all those who have heard the call to assist others are vital to the health and wellbeing of the collective.

The call to heal, help, assist or support others is a call from the deepest part of the soul and it is one that is hard to ignore. For thousands and thousands of years, healers have heard this call and responded by making themselves available to help other people, animals and nature.

The healers of old who followed the call of their soul to master and apply the healing arts underwent many rites of passage that enabled them to do their work. While the skills required for them to work in their particular modality were important, the most essential skills that they learned were ‘soul skills’. These were the secret skills, which focused on the wellbeing, resilience and adaptability of the soul that enabled them to do their work without compromising their own wellbeing, health, vitality or energetic integrity.

These soul skills were acquired by undergoing the sacred, timeless and proven rites of passage of the healer. They were special skills handed down through the ages taught by the elders, mentors, tohunga, healers and wise ones. The world has changed immeasurably since the times where the condition of the soul was known to be a key component of the healer’s abilities and the old ways of acquiring the soul skills are largely gone.

While the old ways of receiving the special training and rites of passage have gone, the soul skills themselves are timeless and archetypal.  Acquisition of soul skills accords special advantages to those who set about learning them and supports them to remain in a state of vitality, enjoy good health and fulfil their healing destiny.

The acquisition of soul skills, the healers secret tools, ultimately gives healers and those in the caring professions the discipline and soul strength to remain in their profession for a lifetime.
